苏木素是组织化学和免疫组织化学中最常用的染料之一，可以广泛用于组织切片或培养细胞的细胞核染色。VG（Van Gieson） 染色是最早用来区分胶原纤维和肌纤维的传统优良染色法，利用酸性品红和苦味酸分别对这两种纤维具有较强亲和力的原理，将其双重染色；染色后胶原纤维呈鲜红色，肌纤维、神经胶质细胞胞质和红细胞呈黄色，Weigert苏木素染色液主要应用于细胞核染色后需要酸处理的技术中， 可以和VG染色配合使用，染色后细胞核呈蓝色或棕蓝色。
